HoopinHips is a small business of one - founded in 2009 by Kelly Durst. It was originally started to provide affordable adult hoops and to educate the public about the health benefits of hooping.
Not much has changed. Although the offerings have expanded to include classes and workshops as well as other fun products, the core reasons for its founding remain as strong as ever.
My business philosophy is to act with integrity and to treat every customer with the fairness and respect they deserve.
Kelly Durst is a local leader in educating the public about the health benefits of hooping by making it fun and accessible. She has helped hundreds of people learn how to hoop and has turned even the most skeptical into believers. She has taught hoop classes for over 2 years and before that, she taught intermediate and advanced Bellydance classes for 3 years. This experience has given her the ability to thoroughly explain hooping and hoop movements.
In the beginning there was…a Muffin Top.
One of the most common questions I get asked is “How did you get into hooping?” And it’s a fair question. Hooping isn’t exactly the most common business or hobby to get into. So, here is my story.
I moved to Colorado from Wisconsin after I graduated from college. Long story short, I managed to land a decent desk job during the beginning of the Great Recession. I was so happy to have my first adult job! But with adult jobs, come other adult things, like the dreaded muffin top.
I was a fairly active college kid, walking everywhere to save on gas since I didn’t have the money to afford it anyway. But within only a few months of taking that desk job, my waistline slowly started to expand. It wasn’t noticeable at first, just a little pudge, but then the little pudge grew into a bigger pudge until it magically morphed into a full-fledged muffing top.
I tried a lot of things to try and eliminate my new accessory, but I couldn’t really stick with anything. I would do what everyone does, the strict calorie-limited diet and the rigid exercise regime. Looking back, I’m not surprised I failed, but at the time I could not figure out why I was stuck with the extra baggage.
And then one day a friend called to invite me to join her at the park. That wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, but I had no idea that I was about to embark on a whole new journey.
When I got to the park, there she was with two of the biggest hula hoops I had ever seen in my life. Up until this point, my experience with a hoop was limited to the cheap, flimsy one my grandma had at her farm. And it wasn’t even a pleasant memory because, to be honest, I sucked at hula hooping. No matter how much I wiggled, I could not keep that thing going.
I saw that giant hoop and saw my redemption. I would be able to hoop! She handed me the smaller of the two hoops and after a few tries, I was hooping. Take that, little plastic red and while hula hoop from my childhood!
I was immediately hooked and spent the rest of the afternoon happily hooping away.
I was addicted and needed my own hoop, but I had no idea where to get one. I couldn’t find anyone in the area that sold them and they were astronomically expensive online. And so I set out to make my own. Easier said than done.
After many hours of R&D, I finally got my first batch made. I was elated! I spent everyday of the next two weeks hooping for at least 30 if not 60 minutes. I would rush home from work, throw on some exercise clothes, bust out the tunes and hoop until I couldn’t hoop any more.
An amazing thing happened. I lost weight. I lost about 5lbs in the first week alone by just hooping. I didn’t change my diet and I didn’t do any other exercise except hooping.
And I was happier than I had been in a very long time. I didn’t realize how much my inactivity was affecting me. Sitting at a desk was slowly starting to make me depressed, but exercise brought me back!
An idea hit me. If I could benefit this much emotionally and physically from hooping, other people probably could too. I’m not the only person with a desk job fighting to keep the muffin top at bay. And if I couldn’t find an adult hoop, then others were probably struggling to find an affordable adult hoop as well. I could help them.
And that is the simplified birth of HoopinHips LLC.
It has been a long and very educational journey, but one that I would not exchange for the world. I love introducing people to the joys of hooping and watching their faces light up when they learn they can hoop and they can master the hoop tricks.
I’ve taught many people of all ages how to hoop, from 3 to 78. And no matter what their age, everyone laughs and smiles. And that is why I continue in my efforts to bring people hoops and hooping knowledge. Their joy brings me my joy.
